Laser Diode Selection
Free-Space Multimode Laser Diodes
Higher-power laser diode options for systems where optical power and direct access to the emitted beam take priority over single-mode beam quality.
Free-space multimode laser diodes provide output directly from the diode, emitter array, or optical package rather than through a delivery fiber. Multimode architectures can support higher optical powers and larger emitting areas, making them useful when power is a primary design requirement and the system can accommodate the resulting beam characteristics.
RPMC offers options ranging from individual emitters to bars, stacks, and integrated packages. Start with the wavelength and power your system requires, then consider emitter format, beam characteristics, package, cooling, and how the source will integrate with your downstream optics.

Key selection considerations include:
- Optical power and emitter format: requirements may be met with a single broad-area emitter, diode bar, stack, or another higher-power architecture.
- Beam quality and focusability: multimode sources generally trade spatial beam quality for increased output power, so the required spot size, divergence, and downstream optics should be considered early.
- Free-space integration: direct beam access gives the optical designer flexibility to select collimation, focusing, shaping, homogenization, or other external optics around the application.

When Should I Consider a Free-Space Multimode Laser Diode?
Start here when higher optical power is important and your system can work with a multimode beam. Free-space output is especially useful when the design requires direct access to the source for external collimation, focusing, beam shaping, or other optical integration.
The available architectures can range from individual broad-area emitters to bars and stacks, so power alone should not determine the selection. Beam requirements, thermal management, package format, operating mode, and available integration space can all affect which approach is practical.
If spatial beam quality and tighter focusability are more important than maximum power, compare free-space single mode laser diodes. If wavelength or spectral control is the primary requirement, compare free-space stabilized laser diodes.

Use the filters and product table below to narrow the available sources by wavelength, power, and other available product characteristics. Individual products may provide additional choices in emitter format, package, cooling, operating mode, beam conditioning, and customization.
What Should I Specify?
Start with the requirements already fixed by the optical and mechanical design. For multimode sources, power and wavelength are important starting points, but the emitter architecture and acceptable beam characteristics can be equally important.
- wavelength or wavelength range
- required optical power or energy
- CW, QCW, or other operating requirements
- single emitter, bar, stack, or other preferred format
- beam size, divergence, or focusing requirements
- package, mounting, and cooling constraints
- electrical and thermal operating conditions
- prototype or expected production quantities
Not every requirement is represented by the filters. RPMC can help compare standard, configurable, and custom options when multiple diode architectures could meet the same wavelength and power target.
A Note About “Multimode”
The term multimode can refer to different beam characteristics depending on the laser architecture. For conventional high-power laser diodes, it commonly describes transverse or spatial mode behavior associated with a wider emitting region. Some specialized sources may instead use multimode terminology to describe spectral behavior. Check the individual product specifications when spatial mode, spectral mode, or both are important to the application.
