Standard When Possible   |   Custom Where Needed

How We Can Help You

Wavelength:

Start with standard and configurable options first. If the required wavelength is not available, RPMC can help evaluate manufacturer-supported custom emitter or wafer options where feasible.

Output Power:

Compare single-emitter, multi-emitter, bar, stack, and other architectures based on required optical power, beam characteristics, operating conditions, package, and thermal constraints.

Packaging:

Evaluate TO-can, butterfly, C-mount, HHL, fiber-coupled, and other formats, with cooling, photodiodes, lensing, and related integration options where supported.

Beam Output:

Define collimation, focus, spot size, divergence, lensing, fiber delivery, or other optical-interface requirements so the source can be matched to the downstream system.

Environmental:

If the laser must operate under demanding thermal, mechanical, or environmental conditions, RPMC can help identify suitable architectures and manufacturer-supported customization or qualification paths.

Chip Design:

For deeper requirements such as emitter width, cavity length, or other semiconductor design parameters, RPMC can work with appropriate manufacturing partners to evaluate a custom development path.

START WITH THE SIMPLEST PATH THAT WORKS

Not every custom laser diode requirement necessitates a completely custom laser. RPMC first looks for the lowest-complexity path that can meet the critical requirements, then moves toward deeper customization only when necessary.

  • Start with a standard solution. If an existing laser diode meets the wavelength, power, beam, package, and integration requirements, there’s no reason to add unnecessary development.
  • Configure an existing product. When the core laser is right, supported changes to fiber delivery, connectors, optics, cooling, photodiodes, packaging, or other options may be enough.
  • Modify a proven platform. If key requirements such as wavelength, output power, package, beam delivery, or thermal design fall outside the standard options, an existing platform may provide the starting point for a more tailored solution.
  • Consider custom development when needed. When established products and platforms cannot meet the critical requirements, RPMC can help define the specifications and work with an appropriate manufacturing partner to evaluate a deeper custom design and a practical path toward prototype and production.

The goal is not the most customized solution.

It is the right level of customization for the application.

How The Custom Process Works

Define the Requirements

Tell us what the laser needs to do, which specifications are fixed, where there is flexibility, expected quantities, development stage, and timeline.

Down-Select Viable Paths

RPMC compares appropriate products, platforms, and manufacturing capabilities to identify the most practical options and the tradeoffs between them.

Develop & Validate the Solution

When customization is required, RPMC works with the appropriate manufacturing partner to refine the configuration and coordinate samples, prototypes, testing, or design adjustments where applicable.

Prepare for Production

Once the solution is validated, RPMC can support the transition toward repeatable ordering, OEM quantities, production planning, and longer-term supply.

What Should I Send RPMC?

You do not need a finalized laser specification to start the conversation. Share the requirements you already know, including which parameters are fixed and where the design has flexibility. RPMC can use that information to compare standard, configurable, modified, and custom paths.

Useful Starting Information

  • wavelength or wavelength range
  • required optical power or energy
  • free-space or fiber-coupled output
  • beam, linewidth, or stability requirements
  • package and mechanical constraints
  • thermal and electrical requirements

Project & Integration Context

  • environmental or operating conditions
  • fiber, connector, lensing, or optical-interface needs
  • which specifications are fixed versus flexible
  • prototype or development stage
  • expected production quantities
  • target timing or program schedule

Not Everything Has to Be Defined Up Front

If some requirements are still being determined, tell us what the laser needs to accomplish in the system. RPMC can help identify which specifications are likely to drive the source selection and where tradeoffs may be possible.

Have a laser diode requirement that standard options are not meeting?

Send us what you know. RPMC can help determine whether the best path is an existing configuration, a modified platform, or a more fully custom solution.
