Fundamentals of Confocal Microscopy: There are many white papers out there which focus heavily on the spectroscopy aspects of this application. However, we have decided to take a slightly different approach with this white paper. Here, we will focus on the optical design of a confocal microscope and how that affects the performance of the system.  In this white paper, we provide a solid understanding of the fundamental optical design of a confocal Raman microscope. Then, we go on to discuss the advantages of this design for collecting Raman spectra and explore the laser requirements and challenges facilitated by this geometry.
