Gas Sensing

Laser diodes are being used in various sectors to manufacture products for gas sensing. The laser diodes are used to detect gases by using the TDLAS technology. Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) instruments measure the concentration of a target molecule in gas samples based on the Lambert-Beer law, whereby molecules present in the gas sample absorb laser light energy in direct proportion to their concentration. TDLAS has an improved performance and accuracy than the infrared or the traditional electrochemical gas sensors.

 

RPMC Lasers offers a wide range of DFB laser diodes ranging from 760nm-2150nm for various gas sensing applications. Our DFB (Distributed Feed Back) lasers offer the highest performance levels, narrow line width (NLW) and ultra-narrow line width, low noise, superior linearity, and are usually faster.  At the heart of our gas sensing lasers is Eblana's Discreet-Mode (DM) technology which allows for excellent SMSR and narrow linewidth (<2MHz). Since laser-based gas sensing requires excellent tuning characteristics, Eblana's DM lasers are the ideal choice because they feature mode-hop free tuning over a minimum of 2nm. The standard package is the 14-pin Butterfly package (with TEC), but these devices are also available in a DX1 module with SM or PM fiber, as well as the TO-39 package with free space output, coaxial Module, TOSA, TO-Can and Chip on Submount, etc.  If you do not see a wavelength you need, please inquire today and we will help out as best as we can.

Tunable diode laser spectroscopy (TDLS) can measure the concentration, temperature and pressure of various gases in-situ under harsh conditions with good time resolution, sensitivity and selectivity. High temperatures, high pressures and particle-laden gas streams can be dealt with. TLDS has become the best available technology and state-of-the art in demanding metrology applications like the determination of trace moisture in HCl or the measurement of NH3 in a stack. The Identification and quantification of various gases is used in a multitude of applications, from industrial process engineering, to hydrocarbon leak detection, to medical condition diagnosis by breath analysis, to combustion analysis. Absorption lines of gases of interest reside in the near infrared region and can be addressed using readily available commercial distributed feedback (DFB) lasers. See the table below.
